The Gary Giacomini Open Space Preserve was named after Gary Giacomini, a Marin County board who was instrumental in saving the land from development. The area runs along the north side of the San Geronimo Ridge and is known for its winding roads as well as variety of trails. One of the well-known trails in the area is Shafter Grade. Known for its steady grade but challenging climb, the Shafter Grade provides hikers direct access to the Bolinas Ridge. The trail is known for its uphill switchbacks as well as interesting redwoods, fir, and laurel.
