Caldwell Butte and Ice Cave Loop is located near Tulelake, California, and is a 5.0-kilometer moderately trafficked loop trail. The trail features a cave and is generally visited and used for hiking and nature trips. It is also accessible throughout the year.

Trails In The Lava Beds National Monument

The Caldwell Butte and Ice Cave Loop trail are at the southern end of the Lava Beds National Monument. A total of about 5 cars can park at the trailhead. Skipping the off-trail portion of the hike can provide you with an easy lollipop trail (1.5 miles or so). Also, the trail portion is smoother than the off-trail segment. Overall, the up and down trail at Caldwell Butte is easy to take. However, the pumice is tough to ascend.

1) Dogs Are Not Allowed (Sadly)

While it may be a good idea to bring your dogs on this adventure, they’re not allowed to enter the trail for good reasons. There is a lot of wildlife in the area, which may be inadvisable for your furry friend.

2) Watch Out For Wild Animals

Be cautious of rattlesnakes and mountain lions. There are sightings of these animals in the area. Therefore, always watch where you’re going.

3) Don’t Leave The Trail Alone

It is inadvisable to leave the trail alone. As much as possible, stay on track especially if you’re still a beginner or an intermediate hiker. No one knows what you may encounter if you go off-trail on your own. Most importantly, bring with you GPS and navigation devices.
