Running from Arcata to Korbel, the Annie and Mary Rail Trail passes through the City of Blue Lake following the Arcata and Mad River Railroad.
The Arcata and Mad River Railroad was the oldest working railroad in California. Founded in 1854, the line closed in 1985 and was then known as California Historical Landmark #842. It has also been affectionately dubbed as the ‘Annie and Mary’. Residents from Blue Lake, Arcata and surrounding areas have joined together to form the Friends of the Annie and Mary Rail-Trail, advocating to transform the landmark into a non-motorized vehicular rail-trail.

The Arcata – Korbel line was named as such (Annie and Mary) in honor of the clerks working at each end of the line. Moreover, another story tells that Annie and Mary Rail-trail was named after Annie and Mary Vintera, nieces of the Korbel brothers and owners of the timber company at the east end of the rail line.
