About Arches National Park

Arches National Park, founded in 1929, lies north of Moab in the state of Utah. Bordered by the Colorado River in the southeast, it is known as the site of more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches, such as the massive, red-hued Delicate Arch in the east. Long, thin Landscape Arch stands in Devils Garden to the north. Other geological formations include Balanced Rock, towering over the desert landscape in the middle of the park.

Hiking Trails in Arches National Park

The park is adjacent to the Colorado River, 4 miles (6 km) north of Moab, Utah. The park consists of 76,679 acres of high desert located on the Colorado Plateau. The highest elevation in the park is 5,653 feet at Elephant Butte, and the lowest elevation is 4,085 feet at the visitor center. The park receives an average of less than 10 inches of rain annually.

1. Park Highlights

People from all over the world come to visit Arches National Park and visiting Delicate Arch is on the top of many visitors’ to-do lists, this free-standing arch has become a widely recognized symbol of the state of Utah and one of the most famous geologic features in the world. The light opening beneath the arch is 46 feet high and 32 feet wide, making it the largest free-standing arch in the park.

2. Family friendly hiking

One of the most rewarding ways to see the park is on foot.  Arches National Park features a wide variety of hikes suitable for all ages. There are many family friendly hikes including the hike to Turret Arch in the Windows Section.

It is easy to get disoriented and lost the deeper into the park you get. Bring a GPS or at the very least a compass.

3. Best time to visit.

Plan your trip wisely. If you are driving, try visiting bet. 7am-8am or 3pm to 5pm in the afternoon. Temperatures are cooler then and you will feel cool just for planning. If you want to go during summer, best to check the forecast before you go for heat and monsoon rain. If you want to go during winter, expect highs between 30 to 50 degrees and nighttime lows of 0-20 degrees.
