The Area and Hike:

Most people who live in California know that Lopez Lake is a great destination for all things water-related including windsurfing, fishing, boating, and waterskiing. However, what most people do not realize is that this area is also a great place for hiking.

The Duna Vista Loop is the best path located in the park and is accessible either by a short hike combined with a boat ride or by a long hike. Taking a boat ride and a short hike is perfect for those individuals who are with a group where half want to boat, and half want to explore the area.

The hike starts at the far end of the park if you are not taking a boat. You will pass through a scout camp called Camp French and hike along the lakeside until the trail starts to climb.

All along the trail, you will see wonderful blooming California fuchsias mixed in with chaparral and sage. After you climb about 600 feet you will be rewarded with some wonderful views of the Pismo Dunes, the Pacific Ocean, and the Wilderness of Santa Lucia.
