About the Gillem Bluff Historic Trail

The Gillem Bluff Historic Trail is a fairly challenging route that begins moderately flat but elevates steeply to the top. The trail is well-maintained, but in certain areas, it can be rough. Scenes from the viewpoint of the park’s geographical formations are spectacular and worth the steep climb. The lava-flow around Gillem Bluff is also the oldest geological feature of the Gillem Bluff, with the lava-flow believed to be approximately 2 million years old.

Trails In The Lava Beds National Monument

Originally, the trail goes north and moves near some of the important structures that once established Gillem’s Camp. The trail then takes a broad turn west and then south, a little beyond the foundations of a circular corral which was once used to house a Modoc prisoner. As you ascend the hill, sightings of the National Monument start to reveal on the left-hand section of the trail.
