Location: Penn Valley, CA
Features: Hiking trails, bird watching, dogs allowed, bike friendly, horseback riding, incredible scenery
A moderately trafficked point to point trail in California, the South Yuba Trail is a narrow trail that follows the South Yuba River. The trail features a variety of terrain from narrow to smooth to dangerous. The section between the Round Mountain Trail and the Purdon Bridge is narrow and steep at times. Moreover, the trail is smooth on the edge of the canyon. The section between Round Mountain and Edwards Crossing Bridge, meanwhile, is a challenging one and requires some technicality. The trail is narrow on the edge with a vertical drop into the canyon. On the other hand, it provides stellar view of the South Yuba River’s steep canyon.

Of course, a flashlight, headlamp, and whistle are important must-haves when going for a long hike or overnight camping.
