Stapelveldt Trail – Mount Tamalpais State Park

The Stapelveldt Trail commences from the Pantoll Trailhead where it takes hikers downhill to a ravine then into a dense wood forest. The trail goes further downhill filled with redwoods and ferns. The trail ends at a junction with the Ben Johnson Trail. The Stapelveldt Trail is named after the builder of the trail, William Stapelveldt. Repairs were then made by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1939.

Mount Tamalpais State Park also houses the Muir Woods National Monument, a United States National Monument and part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

There are so many trails on Mount Tamalpais. It is highly recommended that, prior going on a hike, one should get directions or download a detailed map. Mount Tamalpais maps can be downloaded online. Moreover, maps can also be purchased at the Pantoll Ranger Station or the East Peak Visitor Center.

2) Be properly dressed. Get ready for adventure!

Foremost, it is important to know the nature of the trail prior the hike for you to be able to wear the appropriate outfit. Wear cotton or comfortable clothing during warm walks and hikes however avoid wearing it in the cold. Cotton keeps moisture close to the skin, making you cold.

3) Outdoor GPS helps

Trails can go for miles. Of course, you don’t want to get lost! A map, GPS, compass are essential devices that can help you located campsites, water, and an emergency exit route in case of emergency.
